If you are coming from Bhor in Pune, you have to take the Mandhardevi road via Khanapur, Nere and then proceed along the ghat without going to the Mandhardevi temple. After that, you will reach Gundewadi village at the foot of Pandavgad.

Places to visit on Pandavgad Fort

Our fort tour starts from the Pandavgad board placed near the houses in Gundewadi village. Our journey starts from the path leading from the houses. We can park our vehicles on the opposite side in front of the houses.

The path leading to the fort passes through dense forests. Taking a winding path, you reach the board on the fort, which is a private property of Mapro Garden. From there, you have to take steps carved into the rock.

After walking some distance on the fort, you will come close to a large lake. In this lake, you will see green water in the shade of trees. Immediately ahead, there is a house on the left. After going there, you will have to give your name and information. You have to give information because this place is privately owned by Mapro Garden and the fort is further ahead.

If you come forward with the information, you will see a bad water tank on the left side and another water tank ahead. Pandavgad fort is famous for its water tanks. On the way, you will see a group of some more water tanks. Here too, there are a total of 6 tanks and the first tank is the Khamb Tank.

From here you can also take a walk around the fort. If you go further on the left side, you will see the place of the village deity in the kapari. If you go down to the south side, you will see the path coming from Menavali village. On this path there is also a guard’s deodya and a ruined gate. If you go further around the fort, you will see some more water tanks on the way.

As you move towards the right from the group of 6 tanks, you will see the first gate of the fort. Here you can see the gate with the ruined tower and arch. Further along the path, you will see the second gate of the fort.

After seeing the remains of both the doors, we reach the Maruti temple. Here, in a brick-built temple with a thatched roof, there is an idol of the fierce Maruti. After having the darshan of Maruti Raya, we reach the lime pit. You will get to see the lime pit and both the pits here.

Further along the way is the temple of Pandavajai Mata. In the temple, there is a beautiful idol of Pandavajai Mata in the form of rice and in front of it are some other idols. The roof of the temple is currently in disrepair. Immediately outside the temple, there are two Shivlings and a Nandi. So, it seems that there must be a Shiva temple in this area.

There is a rock in front of the temple and next to it is a Paduka Samadhi sculpture and a small water tank. After seeing all this, if you go behind the temple, there is a dome-shaped temple there. This may be the Shiva temple. The structure of the temple’s peak can be seen clearly from the back.

There is a ruined structure next to the temple. Although the path leading to the southern tower is not paved, the Dhom Dam area looks very beautiful from that side.

There is no path leading to the lake behind the temple. If you want to go, you can reach it from the side from the south tower.

History of Pandavgad Fort

The Shilahara king Bhoj II built Pandavagad. After the fall of the Bahmani rule, this fort was under the rule of Adil Shahi of Bijapur. After that, it came under Swarajya.

Moropant Pingale and Niro Sondev had written to Trimbak Venkatesh on 26 October 1671 asking him, “Shiva Chhatrapati was going to visit Pandavgad from Rohida…” This suggests that Pandavgad was a part of Swarajya during 1671.

In 1689, when Rajaram Maharaja was leaving Raigad and heading towards Jinji, he took shelter at Pandavgad for some time.

In 1701, the fort fell under the control of the Mughals, but it did not remain under their control for long. After the death of Aurangzeb, the fort soon came under the control of the Marathas.

Finally, on March 24, 1818, Major Thatcher stormed the fort and it fell into the hands of the British.
